Dr. Michael Booker will present a lecture entitled, “Claiming Sonic-Space: The Protestant Tradition of Marching in Northern Ireland,” on February 24, 2015 at 7:30 in the Toepke Auditorium on the DCC campus. Northern Ireland has endured a long history of conflict between its population of Protestants who profess their unyielding loyalty to the British Crown and the indigenous Roman Catholics. At the heart of the modern conflict between these two tribes is the issue of Protestant Loyalists parading along the streets of Northern Ireland each year during the “Parading Season.” Dr. Booker will offer a brief background of the overall conflict in Northern Ireland before launching into a detailed synopsis of why the issue of parading and “claiming sonic-space” is at the heart of the Northern Ireland conflict.
