Dawson Community College will host its 2nd Annual High School Welding Invitational on March 4 and 5. Students from seven different Montana high schools will have the opportunity to display their welding savvy, meet industry leaders, and win tuition prizes and waivers.
Chris Ingram and Jim LeProwse, DCC Welding Instructors, developed the written and practical skills tests and look forward to watching the students compete. “We’re excited to have these young welders on campus. They’ve put in a lot of hours of hard work, and we look forward to recognizing their success and helping them refine their skills,” said Ingram.
Students will show their welding skills by performing various welds within a time limit and taking a written exam. Competitors will be graded on proper weld bead placement and uniformity, blue print reading, and other skills by a panel of independent, professional welders in the industry. Students will compete individually on the first day of competition and in teams on the second. The winners will receive trophies created by current DCC welding students and other prizes donated by industry sponsors General Distributing, TransCanada, and WBI Energy.
“Transco Railway Products, Inc. is excited to be a part of DCC’s welding competition for high school students. The shortage of welders nationwide has expanded the opportunities available in manufacturing and other industries for our student-welders,” said Mike Preller of event sponsor Transco Railway. “We look forward to a continued partnership with DCC and hope to see this competition grow into a multi-state event in the future.”
During their breaks in competition, students will have the opportunity to tour the DCC campus, Glendive, and the facility of SRS Crisfulli, another of the event’s sponsors. They will also have a chance to meet with faculty members and current DCC students. Competitors and their chaperones and coaches will also attend a dinner with an industry speaker.
